Write-up from the Vermilion Local Schools “Owen Kyser qualified for the OHSAA boys state wrestling tournament at 150 lbs. Lauren Ficker qualified for the OHSAA girls state wrestling tournament at 105 lbs and Alyssa Woodward earned a state alternate spot at 120 lbs for the girls state wrestling tournament. Owen qualified for the boys state tournament at 150 lbs this past weekend! He saved his best wrestling for the biggest stage, mowing through his competition in the championship prelims, quarter finals, and semi-finals. Owen earned a technical fall in his championship prelim match (15-0), a dominant decision in the quarter finals (9-5), and a first period fall against the 6th ranked wrestler in the state in the semis. Owen has 32 wins on the season, 103 in his career, and a ton of momentum going into the State Tournament. A huge congratulations to Owen on his runner-up finish at district and all of his accomplishments thus far! Lauren qualified for the girls state tournament at 105 lbs this past weekend earning a runner-up finish at the girls regional tournament in Mentor. Lauren dominated her opponents in the championship prelims (fall), quarter finals (fall), and semi-finals (fall) before losing her finals match. She has 28 wins against female competitors this season with 27 of them coming by way of fall. All told Lauren has 35 wins on the season when you add coed competitions into the mix. She is now a two time state qualifier and looks to podium (top 8 finish) or challenge for a state title this year. A huge congratulations to her on all of her accomplishments thus far! Alyssa earned a state alternate spot at 120 lbs this past weekend placing 5th at the girls regional tournament. Alyssa in her freshman campaign had a tremendous season and has quickly made a name for herself in the sport. She earned 23 wins this season, was ranked 14th in state at her weight, and did all of this in her first year in the sport. Please congratulate her on all of her accomplishments!” Vermilion Local School District Vermilion Sailors Athletics
